Fun Things to Do Indoors in Summer

Fun Things to Do Indoors in Summer

Cozy Ideas for Hot Days and Rainy Afternoons

When summer arrives, we often think about beach trips, backyard barbecues, and outdoor adventures. But sometimes the temperatures soar, thunderstorms roll in, or you simply feel like staying inside.

Where I live, it gets hot and humid in the summer. Anytime between ten in the morning to well after seven at night, it's too hot to do much of anything but swim in a pool. Since I don't own a pool, I do a lot of things indoors.

Some of the most enjoyable summer memories can be made right at home.
Whether you're looking for a relaxing solo activity or a fun way to spend time with family and friends, here are six cozy indoor summer ideas that will help you make the most of the season.

Create a Cozy Summer Reading Retreat

Few things are more relaxing than escaping into a good book on a warm summer afternoon.
Transform a corner of your home into a summer reading retreat by gathering a comfortable chair, a soft throw blanket, fresh flowers, and your favorite beverage. Open the curtains to let in natural light, or set up near a window where you can watch summer rain showers drift by.

Choose a stack of books that fit the season—heartwarming women's fiction, cozy mysteries, beach reads, or later-in-life romances. I just finished a series that includes all those genres called Whispers Along the Shore about a woman coming back to her hometown after decades away. She expects an uncomfortable funeral, strained family conversations, and a quick trip back to Chicago. Instead, she finds herself pulled into a mystery connected to the town’s historic lighthouse, a long-destroyed inn, and a box of secrets left behind by the woman who once treated her like family. She runs into an old love and...well, I won't ruin it for you.

Add a glass of iced tea or lemonade, and you'll have the perfect recipe for a peaceful afternoon. A cozy reading retreat is also a wonderful reminder to slow down and enjoy life's simple pleasures.

Have a Summer Movie Marathon

When the weather isn't cooperating, turn your living room into a mini movie theater.
Pick a fun theme for your marathon:

  • Beach-themed movies
  • Romantic comedies
  • Classic family favorites
  • Small-town stories
  • Cozy mysteries

Make popcorn, prepare a snack board, dim the lights, and settle in for an afternoon of entertainment.

Invite family members to vote on the movie lineup or create a movie bingo card to make the experience even more interactive.

Create a Summer Baking Day

Nothing fills a home with comfort quite like the smell of something delicious baking in the oven.
Set aside a day to try seasonal recipes featuring fresh summer flavors. Some favorites include:

  • Lemon bars
  • Blueberry muffins
  • Strawberry shortcake
  • Peach cobbler
  • Raspberry coffee cake

Turn on your favorite music, pour yourself a refreshing drink, and enjoy the process.

Better yet, invite children, grandchildren, or friends to join you. Baking together often creates memories that last far longer than the treats themselves.

Host a Family Game Day

Looking for a screen-free way to connect with loved ones?

Gather everyone around the table for a family game day. Pull out favorite board games, card games, trivia challenges, or puzzles and enjoy a little friendly competition. One of my favorites is Monopoly. It's an oldie but a goodiie.
To make it extra special:

  • Create simple prizes for winners.
  • Serve fun summer snacks.
  • Let each family member choose one game.
  • Take photos throughout the day.

Laughter and shared experiences often become the moments we remember most.

Learn a New Recipe or Mocktail

Summer is the perfect time to experiment in the kitchen.
Challenge yourself to learn a new recipe you've always wanted to try. Whether it's a fresh salad, homemade bread, seasonal dessert, or colorful mocktail, trying something new can be both fun and rewarding.

One refreshing option is a recipe I just posted called Strawberry Lemon Summer Mocktail made with fresh strawberries, lemon juice, sparkling water, and mint. It's easy to make, beautiful to serve, and perfect for hot summer days.

You could even create a "summer recipe challenge" and try one new recipe each week.

Host an Indoor Summer Book Club

If you love reading, why not share that joy with others?

Invite a few friends over for an indoor summer book club. Choose a novel everyone can enjoy, then gather for conversation, refreshments, and plenty of laughter. Even come up with fun ideas and games involving the books to keep things interesting like a reading bingo.

Create a cozy atmosphere with:

  • Fresh flowers
  • Light summer snacks
  • Iced tea, lemonade, or mocktails
  • Comfortable seating
  • A themed playlist

Book clubs aren't just about discussing stories—they're about building friendships and creating connections.

And if your chosen book happens to be a cozy mystery or a heartwarming small-town romance, even better.

Embrace the Joy of a Cozy Summer

Summer doesn't have to be filled with constant activity or elaborate plans. Some of the most meaningful moments happen when we slow down and enjoy simple pleasures at home.

Whether you're curling up with a good book, baking a favorite dessert, hosting a movie marathon, playing games with family, learning a new recipe, or gathering friends for a book club, there are countless ways to create joy indoors this summer.

So the next time the weather keeps you inside, don't think of it as a missed opportunity. Think of it as the perfect excuse to create a cozy summer day you'll remember long after the season ends.
