A Summer Bucket List for Women

A Summer Bucket List for Women

My summers usually look like I'm desperately trying not to sweat on everything while hoping to get some writing done, all the while dealing with my kids. But there is something I dread leading up to summer. What is the thing keeping up at night besides hot flashes? When someone asks, "So, got any big plans this summer?"

No, I wish I did, but with the cost of everything lately and my boys in their awkward teenage years, doing fun things as a family usually involves smaller, more reasonable adventures. That's why I came up with a list of fun summer things to do for people like me. People who aren't going on exciting, weeks-long holidays to beachy towns.

As summer has a way of inviting some of us to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and rediscover the simple joys that often get lost in the busyness of everyday life. Summer adventures don't have to involve exotic vacations or elaborate plans; they can be the perfect opportunity to try something new, reconnect with yourself, and create meaningful memories.

If you're looking for inspiration, here are some ideas I thought of to add to your summer bucket list this year.

1. Read a Cozy Summer Book

Few things feel more like summer than finding the perfect book and settling into a comfortable chair on the porch, by the pool, or under a shady tree. Whether you may enjoy heartwarming romances, women's fiction, cozy mysteries, or uplifting stories about second chances, summer is the ideal time to get lost in a good book.

Create your own reading retreat with a cold glass of iced tea, a cozy blanket for cooler evenings, and a stack of books you've been meaning to read. Better yet, invite a friend to join you and start a mini summer book club.

If you like heartwarming romances try Nantucket Second Chances by Pamela Kelley

If you like feel-good women's fiction try The Forgotten Inn by May North

If you like cozy mysteries try Beachfront Bakery by Fiona Grace

2. Take a Day Trip to Somewhere New

You don't have to travel far to enjoy an adventure. Visit a nearby small town, explore a local historic site, stroll through a botanical garden, or spend the day browsing independent bookstores and charming shops.

Sometimes the best memories come from spontaneous outings that take you just beyond your usual routine.

3. Reconnect with an Old Friend

Life gets busy, and it's easy to lose touch with people who once played an important role in our lives. This summer, reach out to an old friend for coffee, lunch, or a simple phone call.

You might be surprised how quickly you pick up where you left off and how meaningful those conversations can be.

4. Enjoy More Time Outdoors

Summer offers countless opportunities to enjoy nature. Take morning walks, visit a local park, start a small garden, or simply sit outside and watch the sunset.

Spending time outdoors can improve your mood, reduce stress, and remind you to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you every day.

5. Try a New Hobby

Have you always wanted to learn watercolor painting? Photography? Baking artisan bread? Summer is the perfect season to experiment with something new.

The goal isn't perfection—it's enjoying the process and giving yourself permission to be a beginner. I tried knitting once. Only once and it's best not to bring it up again. Let's just say my fingers are better at smashing the keys of a keyboard to write then delicately weaving needles and yarn together.

6. Host a Simple Gathering

Invite a few friends or family members over for lemonade on the porch, a backyard barbecue, or an evening dessert gathering.

The best get-togethers aren't always elaborate. Often, the most memorable moments come from simple conversations and shared laughter.

7. Create a Summer Memory Journal

Keep track of your favorite summer moments, big and small. Write down funny conversations, places you visit, books you read, and things that make you smile.

I admit I am a total sucker for a beautiful journal. Every so often I go looking online for a journal (not that I need another one) and stumble across gorgeous ones that I salivate over. Here's one I found that has a variety of different covers that are simply stunning: Click Here for the Floral Journal.

8. Treat Yourself to a Solo Adventure

Take yourself out to lunch, visit a museum, browse a bookstore, or spend a day exploring your community on your own.

Solo adventures can be surprisingly empowering and offer a chance to recharge and reconnect with yourself.

9. Watch the Sunrise or Sunset

It's a simple activity, but one that many of us rarely make time for. Pick a morning or evening, put away your phone, and enjoy the beauty of the moment.

With teenage boys in the house these are sometimes the only moments I have for peace and quiet.

10. Embrace a Fresh Start

Summer can be a wonderful season for new beginnings. Whether it's setting a personal goal, decluttering a room, starting a new project, or simply adopting a more positive mindset, give yourself permission to grow.

Life doesn't stop offering opportunities for joy, adventure, and new chapters—no matter your age.

Make This Summer One to Remember

Your summer bucket list doesn't have to be packed with grand plans or expensive adventures. The most rewarding moments often come from slowing down, spending time with people you love, trying something new, and curling up with a cozy summer book that transports you to a charming small town filled with friendship, romance, and hope.

So grab that book, pour yourself a glass of iced tea, and start creating a summer filled with memories you'll cherish long after the season ends.
